What Google says about replying to reviews, what it does not say about ranking, and what customers expect. An honest, sourced answer for small businesses in India.

Search for "does replying to Google reviews help" and you will find confident claims in both directions: "replies boost your Maps ranking" and "replies do nothing". Neither is quite what Google says. Here is the short, sourced answer for a small business owner.

Short answer: replying helps in ways you can see and control: how customers read your profile, what you learn, and how you handle problems in public. Google does not say that replying to reviews raises your local ranking.

What Google says about replying

On its help page about responding to reviews, Google says:

  • Replies are public and help you build good relationships with customers.
  • A prompt response shows that you value your customers' feedback.
  • A constructive reply to a complaint can show that you care and may even encourage the customer to update their review.
  • Reviews can help your business stand out and give potential customers helpful information.
  • Replies should not repeat the same thank-you every time. Share something useful instead.

Google's page on improving local ranking adds that positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out.

What Google says about ranking

Google says local results are mainly based on three things:

  1. Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone searches for.
  2. Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
  3. Prominence: how well-known your business is.

Under prominence, Google says information such as the number of reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Its pages do not say that replying to reviews is a ranking factor. So do not buy a tool or write a plan on the promise that replies will move you up the list. That promise is not backed by Google.

What customers expect

Customers read replies as part of your service. In a January 2025 survey by the review-software company GatherUp, summarised by Search Engine Journal, 92% of consumers said they now consider owner responses to reviews part of good customer service. Two cautions: it surveyed more than 1,200 consumers in North America, not India, and it comes from a vendor. Treat it as a direction, not a verdict on your city.

What you gain by replying

  • Readers see how you handle problems. Most people reading a negative review are deciding whether to visit. A calm, specific reply is your chance to speak to them.
  • You can answer questions in public. If a review asks "do you deliver?", your answer helps the next person with the same question.
  • You learn faster. Reading and answering reviews shows you the repeated complaints (the wait, the parking, the price) before they cost you more customers.
  • Some unhappy customers come back. Google notes a constructive reply can encourage a customer to update their review.

What replying will not do

  • It will not guarantee a higher Maps position.
  • It will not fix an incomplete profile (hours, categories, photos, phone number).
  • It will not replace getting more genuine reviews. Google's own page says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask happy customers to review you, and never offer rewards in exchange for reviews.

A routine that is easy to keep

  1. Check for new reviews every day or two and reply while the visit is fresh.
  2. Use the reviewer's name and one real detail from their review.
  3. Reply in the language they wrote in.
  4. For complaints, follow the steps in how to reply to a negative Google review. For praise and mixed feedback, see Google review reply examples in Hindi, English and Hinglish.
  5. Once a month, check how many reviews you have answered. Our guide on tracking your review reply rate shows how.

Making it sustainable

The hard part is not knowing what to write. It is doing it consistently, in the right language, while you run the business. ReplyDost drafts a reply to each new Google review in the language the reviewer used, you edit if you want, and on a paid plan it can publish automatically.
